Introducing iPassConnectTM

iPassConnect is a roaming service which gives you internet access via your BigPond account when you are overseas. iPassConnect is a universal client which provides 26,000 dial-up connections in over 160 countries worldwide.

Who is this guide for?

This guide is intended for BigPond members and includes PC client set up, testing and general use of the Global Roaming service.

What are the system requirements?

Minimum Hardware Requirements
Pentium III processor (or equivalent AMD processor)
256MB RAM
100MB free disk space
TCP/IP Protocol
16-bit colour mode

Connectivity Device Requirements
56K v90/92 modem for a dial-up connection

Operating System Requirements
iPassConnect 3.50 is supported on Microsoft Windows 2000 SP 4 or later, and Windows XP Home or Professional (Service Packs 1 and 2). iPass strongly encourages the use of Windows XP SP 2. In addition, you should install all Microsoft-recommended updates for your operating system.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 is required. At the time of publication Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 is not supported with iPassConnect 3.50, however iPass is committed to full support for IE7 from its general release date so stay tuned.

INSTALLATION

Installing the PC client
Before leaving Australia, you must enable Global Roaming on your account and download the iPassConnect client.

Download the iPassConnect software to your PC now.

You also need to check that you have the hardware requirements. Make sure your modem has been designed and approved for use in the countries you'll be visiting and check that you have the right power plugs and phone connections for your PC. The easiest way to do all this is to contact your modem's manufacturer.

TEST CONFIGURATION

How do you test your configuration before leaving Australia?
Once you have downloaded the software client, you can test the configuration by dialing an international POP from Australia. Please note, charges and GST will apply for use of the service within Australia - please refer to latest rates.

How do you configure your system for Global Roaming?
Step 1 - Install iPassConnect client onto your PC.
Step 2 - Enable Global Roaming on your account.
Step 3 - Ensure antivirus and personal firewall software is up to date.
Step 4 - Update phonebook to ensure you have the latest access numbers and settings (this is done by selecting 'Settings, Update, iPassConnect, Phonebook' in the client software).
Step 5 - Enable SMTP Authentication (see below).

Will I need to change my proxy settings to use ipass?
iPass does not require any proxy, however the service will operate with proxies if configured. If your proxy is publicly available (i.e. from external networks) then no changes are required. If your proxy is only accessible from your network, then users will need to remove these proxy settings.

How fast are overseas POP connections?
Overseas dial POPs vary in maximum connect speeds from 28800bps to 56000bps for analogue dial, and up to 128kbps for ISDN. The maximum speed of the dial POPs is indicated by clicking the 'i' icon next to the dial number - in the pop-up screen there is a field for Max speed. Please note that speed is also impacted by the quality of the telephone line, PABX and switchboard systems as well as the modem hardware in use

TROUBLESHOOTING
To review recent unsuccessful dial attempts and potential troubleshooting solutions, click Help and then choose Connection Log.

Difficulty connecting to the access number

  1. Try an alternate number within the region.
  2. Make sure you dial the required prefixes and local dial code for the region. Many hotels require you to dial a number to get an outside line.
  3. If you are using a bookmark, check the dial string. Make certain there are no extra or missing digits.
  4. Verify that the phone is working by lifting the handset and listening for a dial tone.
  5. Make sure you configure the iPassConnect dial properties appropriately for each location.

No dial tone or modem sound
  1. Make sure the phone cord is connected to both the computer and the phone jack.
  2. Make sure the speaker volume is not turned off or disabled.
  3. Check your Dial Properties. Try checking or un-checking Location same as selected number.
  4. Attempt to connect again.

Password authentication is slow (more than 60 seconds)
  1. Do not click Cancel. In some areas, it may take up to 120 seconds or more to connect.
  2. Under Options then select Settings, make sure that the Redial if not connected in 60 seconds option is set to 120 seconds.
